Seniority Allowance

Entitlement

Fifteen working days of paid vacation are granted as a seniority allowance after a professor has completed 10, 15, 20, 30, 35, 45 and 50 years of service. The allowance after 25 years is 22 working days, and the allowance after 40 years is 30 working days.

If the professor’s working hours have varied during the qualifying period, the seniority allowance is based on their average working hours over the previous five years (or 10 years in the case of the 10-year seniority allowance).

Payment in Lieu of Leave

Upon request, or should operational circumstances make taking vacation impossible, the seniority allowance may instead be paid out. The amounts paid are as follows:

• For the 25-year anniversary: 1/12 of annual salary
• For the 40-year anniversary: 1/9 of annual salary
• For other anniversaries:   1/18 of annual salary

Termination of the Employment Relationship

A share of the seniority allowance that would next fall due is granted if the professor has served for at least 21 years when the employment relationship is terminated, and the next service anniversary is no more than four service years ahead. This does not apply in the case of the restrictions set out in the Employment Ordinance of the Canton of Zurich, e.g. if notice of termination has been served by the University, or in the event of death.
