Recognizing Diplomas

In many cases, in order to work in Switzerland or to complete basic or further training or education, diplomas or educational qualifications acquired abroad must be recognized in Switzerland. The recognition confirms that the foreign diploma or certificate is equivalent to a Swiss diploma or certificate.

Different recognition procedures apply depending on nationality and the duration of the person's professional career. In addition, different offices are responsible for recognition depending on the profession and educational background.

The national contact point in the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) serves as the first point of contact for general questions relating to the recognition of foreign diplomas.

Regulated and Non-Regulated Professions

In Switzerland, a distinction is made between regulated and non-regulated professions. This distinction is important when it comes to the recognition of foreign diplomas.

In the case of regulated professions, the exercise of the profession is regulated by law and linked to a specific degree or title. Qualifications not acquired in Switzerland must be recognized for you to work in Switzerland in your original profession.

If your profession is unregulated in Switzerland, you do not generally need to have a foreign diploma or certificate recognized in order to practice your profession.
