Short-Term Absences

The following rules apply to short-term absences on the part of professors:

  • As a rule, absences during the lecture period must be authorized by the Executive Board of the University, even if shorter than ten working days. The corresponding request must be submitted through official channels at least four weeks before the planned absence. Please note the information given below on short-term absences on the part of parents with school-age children, if it applies to you.
Short-term official absences of up to a maximum of ten working days, or two working weeks, do not require authorization, but must always be reported to the responsible dean in advance.
  • Absences during the lecture-free period generally do not require authorization from the Executive Board of the University, but must always be reported to the responsible dean in advance.

Short-Term Absences of Parents of School-Age Children

To enable parents to balance family and professional life, the Executive Board of the University decided in 2014 to permit absences for personal reasons during the lecture period exclusively for parents of school-age children. These absences must be taken as vacation days. They may be taken only during the children’s school holidays and are subject to authorization. The application must be submitted to the Executive Board of the University via official channels at least four weeks before the planned absence.

Vacation days during the lecture period may not exceed two calendar weeks per year, and the application must include comprehensive details of deputization arrangements, especially where teaching is concerned.

The Executive Board of the University makes the final decision on each individual application. There is no legal entitlement to have such leave approved.

Stays Abroad

Stays abroad during absences from work must be mentioned in the application letter as, depending on the duration of the stay, the Professorships Department may have to apply for the necessary transfer confirmations. These confirm that the person in question remains subject to Swiss social insurance law during the stays abroad.
